The main activities conducted in Romania during the fourth year implementation of the of the Project “Surveillance and response to avian and pandemic influenza‟, funded by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were as following:
- Annual Influenza Workshop November 17th and 18th 2016 at Bucharest. The theme of the workshop was “The results of ARI, ILI and SARI Surveillance in 2015-2016 seasons and releasing the methodology of ARI, ILI and SARI Surveillance for 2016-2017 seasons.”
The presentations were as following: - Major Public Health Alerts; -The results of ARI and ILI Surveillance in Romania, season 2015-2016; -The results of SARI Surveillance in Romania; --ARI and ILI Surveillance Methodology in 2016-2017 seasons; -SARI Surveillance Methodology in 2016-2017 seasons;-The results of laboratory investigations for influenza, season 2015-2016 particularities. This national workshop represented a good opportunity to raise awareness about the major public health alerts and other important issues. This time the main subjects were Influenza AH7N9, AH5N1; avian influenza AH5N8, IHR 2005 - 2 PHEICs: poliomyelitis and Zika virus infections together with neonatal malformations and neurological disturbances; the European Day dedicated to antibiotic resistance.
- On December 13th, 2016, the Training for one regional laboratory was organized. The main training objectives were: -evaluation of the Regional Laboratory status for the preparations in order to implement the molecular diagnosis of the flue form clinical specimen originating in the sentinel system of the Iași Public Health Department; - evaluation of the validation for the real-time RT-PCR method for detecting the flu virus A/B types, H1/H3 subtypes; - identification of strengths and weaknesses as a result of the training, recommendations and conclusions.
- Training for Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS)
Between May 02 – 05, 2017 a new Romanian scientist attended the workshop NGS held in Hamburg. The purpose of the workshop was to get a deeper understanding in (NGS) with a special focus on bioinformatics issues. The main objective of the workshop was to learn the essential computing skills for NGS bioinformatics, understand NGS technology, algorithms and data formats etc.
