From 05 May to 14 June 2017 sentinel site visits were conducted on 14 ILI/ARI sentinel sites and 4 sentinel SARI sites in Macedonia. Site visits were organized by the Institute of Public Health (IPH). Each site was visited by a team of two experts involved in the sentinel surveillance (one person from epidemiology department and one person from virology laboratory). During the visits, the team discussed with staff from sentinel sites regarding the conditions of running sentinel surveillance; type of patients connected with the sentinel site; knowledge of the case definition; proper use of the reporting forms; sampling, storage and transporting of samples; use of PPE and hand hygiene, as well as problems which they encounter during the daily work. New swabs with virus transport medium were distributed to all sites with the guidelines for use and sampling process was explained. The need of software which will connect sentinel sites with the IPH was clearly expressed, as well as a closer collaboration with the local epidemiologist.
