On February 24th, 2017 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina SECID organised the Annual Influenza Meeting on “Improving Influenza Surveillance and Pandemic Response in SEE Countries”. This event took place in the framework of the five year project Surveillance and Response to Avian and Pandemic Influenza supported by CDC, Atlanta, USA.
The aim of the meeting was to present the achievements and challenges of influenza surveillance and pandemic preparedness in SEE countries.
The objectives were:
- Evaluate the indicators of success and challenges of Influenza surveillance and pandemic preparedness in countries of South East Europe (SEE);
- Explore and understand the opportunities and threats to build sustainable influenza surveillance and response systems in SEE countries.
- Evaluate the performance of all activities of the third year of Influenza project and the challenges for the fourth year.
- Evaluate the vaccine use and influenza preparedness in SEE countries.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of CDC, Atlanta, USA, WHO Euro and ECDC who developed relevant presentations related to influenza and vaccine use.
After a general overview about project implementation 2013 – 2016, all the countries presented third year progress on influenza surveillance, pandemic preparedness, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, and results, as well as future plans. Avian Influenza was an important issue discussed in the meeting.
